Whilst in the past documents only needed to be authenticated by people, now many documents need to also be detected by machines.  Whilst in the past they were mostly printed in offset, letterpress and - for high-value documents - intaglio, now other printing processes such as silkscreen, flexography and gravure have become common practice.

A good example of this evolution is SICPA OASIS^®, a multi-level security system based on unambiguous, simple authentication for different target groups.

The first security level of SICPA OASIS^® consists of an unambiguous colour-shift that is simple for the public to authenticate. The second level, for document controllers or inspectors, consists of a light polarisation effect seen through a special double filter that is visible even under poor lighting conditions.
